Irvington Pre-K Newsletter for the week of November 3 – November 7, 2008

We had a wonderfully full and eventful week!  The children had a loved finding out interesting facts and exploring nocturnal animals this week.   While wrapping up our studies on spiders we investigated the many animals and their night behaviors.  We also continued to build and develop such skills as: using large motor skills through our many interactive songs, cutting/ drawing and tracing letters and crafts, sharing, using our words to communicate, and learning how to listen and take turns.

Next week, we will begin the theme: Space.  We will continue exploring Space for two weeks.  We will begin the letter “Ii” this week so please bring in your shares accordingly.

Congratulations to our person of the week…Samuel!

The Week in Review:

Monday, November 3, 2008

Today we opened our letter “Hh” bag and made a list of the “Hh” words: Hummingbird, Horse, Huge, Hungry, and Happy.  Alex also brought in a Playmobil Horse to share with our class!  It also came with a knight who fights dragons.

We talked about the word nocturnal, and what it means.  We learned about owls, and how they hunt during the night.  We also learned that owls eyes don’t move like ours, so they have to move their heads. They have talons/claws as well.  We read parts of the book Night Creatures and also read the book Owl Babies.  Some of the children made construction paper owls with bright, feathery wings.  Cami shared a molted skin from her tarantula, Clarice.

We went to the gym in two groups and learned how to jump rope with teacher Karen.  The children had a great time using their jump ropes to create letters and numbers as well as learning the basic skills of jump roping.

At circle time we developed our knowledge of nocturnal animals.  We talked about bats and reviewed owls.  We read Owl Moon, Bats at the Beach, and Amazing Bats.  We sang the songs “Nocturnal Animals” and, Twinkle twinkle little bat”.  We also went over the calendar and letter “Hh”.  The children came up with a variety of “Hh” words and brought in some “Hh” shares, a hippopotamus, and a horse.

During choice time the children made wonderful floppy bats that swoop through the air.  They also played in our new tent as they pretended to camp in the woods.  The children also put together many puzzles, played in the sensory table, played games such as people match and pipeline, created with legos, read books, and played with the animals.

Today we talked about Raccoons!  We read the book Raccoons and Ripe Corn by Jim Arnosky.  We discussed what we learned about bats, and what we know and want to know about raccoons.  We also went over our calendar and counted the calendar in English and Spanish.

During choice time we made raccoon masks using construction paper and craft sticks.  At the sensory table, we talked about how raccoons like to wet their food before eating it.  We filled the table with water and an assortment of raccoon food such as plastic fruits, vegetables, a crawdad, some fish, and delicious insects.  We also built with legos, played with trains, drew pictures, and played with animals.

At circle time we reviewed the nocturnal animal’s owls, bats, and raccoons.  We learned about other night creatures including foxes, jaguars, skunks, bush babies, badgers, and kangaroos.  We also went over our calendar and went over the letter “Hh”.  Alton and Finley each brought in a horse for an “Hh” share.

Half the group had gym with teacher Karen today.  They climbed on the rock wall and the ropes.  They also played basketball!  The children had a blast!  Outside the children had a great time exploring and finding worms.  We all dug them up and gave them each new muddy homes.

During choice time the children were really enjoying playing board games with each other.  They also drew pictures, played with the huge legos, played with the animals in the play house, camped out in the tent, and created towns in the block area.

We started off the day with counting the calendar in English and Spanish as well as reviewing all our nocturnal animals.  We sang “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”, “10 Horses”, and “Willaby Wallaby”.  We read the books Jazzy in the Jungle, Knuffle Bunny, and listed to the book All Pigs are Beautiful.  We also read Samuels’ Person of the Week book, which was full of amazing pictures.

At circle time we looked at pictures of various nocturnal animals, and the children identified them.  Then we took turns telling the group facts we learned about each animal.  During share time Alton shares his stuffed hamster, and we took turns thinking of H names for him.  Rowan thinks that his name should be Hippy–Hoppy Hamster!  Outside we had a great time playing snake tag!
