This week we continued our look into the world of insects. We observed many different types of insects, and began to talk about the life cycle of several common insects.

At the science table this week we have had a variety of objects available for observation: honeycombs, bees, two different types of wasps’ nest, and even live walking stick bugs! Alec brought in a real Luna moth to share, and Alex, Eloise, and Myles all brought in insects to share with the class and identify. On Wednesday, we were very fortunate to have Cami’s dad Mace, who is an insect expert visit our class to talk with us. He and Cami shared some great stories, and the kids had a great time learning about the bugs that they had brought from home. Thanks again Mace and Cami!

In the gym with Karen we have started square dancing! This year our class is practicing with the first graders, it’s really great to see the older children mentoring our Pre-K class, some of the calls are very difficult but all of the kids are working hard!

At the art table this week we made construction paper caterpillars, using different color circles for the body. The kids had a great time cutting and adding legs and faces to personalize their caterpillars.  We also learned an interesting fact from Mace caterpillars have false legs! Only their first three sets of legs are true legs! Later in the week we finally made use of all those toilet paper tubes (thanks parents)! Over two days we made pom-pom caterpillars and then sealed them in t.p. tube cocoons.  While they were drying we spray-painted coffee filters to use as wings. Once they were complete, we helped our caterpillars hatch out, and clipped their wings on so that they could become beautiful butterflies.

During circle time, we read a variety of books, including Insect World, Crickwing, and Butterflies and Moths. We also learned two new finger plays, “Bees in the Hive”, and “Ants in my Hat”.

Our special person of the week was Myles; Myles’ favorite colors are black, blue, and green.  He likes to eat cake, and wishes for 100 televisions, 100 dollars, and 100 videogames. When Myles grows up, he would like to be a dirt biker! Hooray Myles!
