IED PRE-K NEWSLETTER FOR THE WEEK OF
OCTOBER 5-8

This week began our transition from talking about the five senses, to exploring our insides; taking a look at the human body. Monday we took a look at the foundation of the body, the skeleton. We read a variety of books, learned the names and locations of some of the major bones, played a guessing game using real x-rays, and made pictures of skeletons using q-tips as bones! Tuesday we learned about our muscles, and how they function. We did a variety of physical activities so we could feel our muscles working, including stop n' freeze, and learned some yoga positions from the book My Daddy's A Pretzel. Wednesday we learned about our largest sensory organ, skin, and how it protects our bodies. We also learned about the importance of hand-washing, and did a fun experiment to show why we should always cover our coughs and sneezes. To show how germs spread when someone sneezes, we popped two confetti filled balloons; one wrapped in a "tissue" (covered sneeze), and one without (uncovered). The kids had a great time picking up all of the "germs" afterward! Thursday was germ day in pre-k, we read Germs, Germs, Germs!, and Germs Make Me Sick. After reading about germs, the kids were inspired to create and name their own germs; we had germs that could make you travel, germs that help people, super germs, and quite a few germs that make people, "throw up sick." During circle we talked again about the importance of hand-washing, and saw one way germ transmission works by spreading finger paint (germs) from one person to the next, by shaking hands with our friends; the kids really enjoyed being able to see how germs move, and they loved getting rid of them in the sink!

Over the next week, we’ll be looking at bones, skin and muscles as well as the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and nervous systems. Children are welcome to bring in books, models and any other materials that relate to the study of the body for their sharing times.
