Monday March 1st

  • Today we started our Dr. Seuss week by reading a mini magazine about Dr. Seuss and saw by the picture that Dr. Seuss is not in fact a cat in a red striped hat, but an actual person named Theodore Geisel.  We then talked about different books the children have read that were written by Dr. Seuss.
  • We introduced the letter of the week, ‘U' and went through the items in our u bag.
  • We read Yertle the Turtle, Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go NOW!, Gertrude McFuzz,  and The Big Brag- all by Dr. Seuss, naturally.
  • For our art projects we made Yertle the Turtle bowls which we later stacked (just like in the book) and we made our own version of Gertrude McFuzz using feathers and lots of glitter.
  • We switched our calendar to March, checked the weather and assigned new frog jobs.
  • Before leaving in the afternoon the children practiced counting while in the circle (each child had their own number) both frontwards and backwards with teacher Mir.

Tuesday March 2nd

  • Today was the actual anniversary of Dr. Seuss's Birthday so we thought we should read the very first children's book he wrote- over 70 y ears ago- To Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street.  We then thought of what things we would have added to the imaginary parade in the book.
  • We also read The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, and 10 Apples Up on Top (this book we explained was written by Dr. Seuss under another pretend name Theo LeSeig something he did when he wrote books, but had someone else illustrate them).
  • In honor of Dr. Seuss's most famous character we made our own red and white striped cat in the hat hats.
  • We worked on Finley's person of the week book to present to him on Thursday.
  • We worked together to make a "paper quilt" of different Dr. Seuss characters that is currently hanging in our reading corner, it is quite cute and very colorful.  I think Dr. Seuss would be very proud.

Wednesday March 3rd

  • We read The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins and afterwards we created our own Bartholomew Cubbins style hats, complete with faux jewels and feathers.
  • We read Horton Hears a Who, The Sleep Book, What Was I Scared Of?, and the Sneetches.
  • We counted our calendar and checked our weather and enjoyed lots of the sunshine outside!
  • We sang Down by the Bay and A Sailor Went to the Sea (the long version).
  • Before it was time to go home we read, I Wish I Had Duck Feet by Theo. LeSeig, and each child took a turn telling me which one part of an animal they wished they could have on their body and why.  Cheetah legs were very popular, so that they could run fast!

Thursday March 4th

  • We practiced making our morning routine with teacher Mir.  Each child took turns going to the door, knocking, and then when they entered they said "Good morning" and practiced making eye contact when speaking.
  • We learned a new song, 10 Little Monsters.
  • We reviewed our birthday poster and song our months of the year song.  When it came to each child's birth month they would stand up and then sit back down.
  • We read Finley his person of the week book.  This was a day early as he was going skiing this weekend.
  • At the art table we made Horton masks.
  • We read One Fish Two Fish Blue Fish, The Cat in the Hat and Oh, the Places You Will Go!

Friday March 5th

  • Today we read Thidwick the Kind Hearted Moose, Green Eggs and Ham, and Too Many Daves.
  • We made Who people at the art table (from Horton Hears a Who)
  • We practiced our 10 Little Monster Song again and sang A Sailor Went to Sea.
  • We sampled green eggs and ham and made a chart on who liked green eggs and ham, and who did not.
  • We made Horton babies after listening to a recording of Horton Hatches the Egg.
  • At the end of the day we played a little Dr. Seuss trivia to see what the children recalled from all of the books we had read this week!

We had some wonderful sharing this week, 2 ukuleles, an underwater Playmobile set, a unicorn purse, a u-bolt,  umbrellas- both big and small, one child shared himself- under a chair, and some children even brought their own Dr. Seuss books to share.  We appreciate everyone being so creative with their sharing this week- we understand how difficult the letter U was!

Finley Murray was our person of the week and we found out that he is 5 years old, he is 3' 7"  tall, has green eyes and brown hair.  His favorite foods are hot dogs, spaghetti, and macaroni and cheese.  When he grows up he would like to be a firefighter or a giant fireman.  A few things he likes are going on the potty, dogs, stinky feet and transformers.  He does not like when his momma sees him smile and when his favorite songs come up.  Finally, if Mr. Finely had 3 wishes he would wish for  a dragon, a dog named Alpha Attack Fire and he would wish to go on a shooting star in outer space that will never, ever stop.

Next week our letter of the week will be ‘V' and we will be starting our insect unit!
